The Opulent 2023 Genesis GV70 (Review) – Auto Trends Magazine

The Genesis brand continues to make a name for itself, thanks to stylish and value-oriented models such as the GV70 SUV. This compact model seats five and comes in two well-equipped grades with up to three package choices available.

The challenge for consumers is deciding which of the two turbocharged engines will power their ride as both are solid performers.

2023 Genesis GV70 Review

Now in its second year, the Genesis GV70 returns with no major changes. The Electrified GV70 version arrives later in the model year, a fully electric version that looks nearly identical to the gas model.

Genesis offers the 2023 GV-70 in two grades that coincide with the engine choice. These are the 2.5T ($42,900) and 3.5T ($55,000). Add $1,095 for the destination fee.

Once the customer selects the grade, they’re directed to add packages.

  • For the 2.5T model these are Standard (no extra cost), Select ($3,750), Advanced ($8,650), and Sport Prestige ($12,800).
  • For the 3.5T, the packages are Sport (included), Sport Advanced ($4,950), and Sport Prestige ($9,900). Thus, a fully equipped GV70 would top $65,000.

Exterior Remarks

The GV70 complements the midsize GV80 SUV in every way. From its oversized diamond grille, quad headlights, and distinct taillights, to its sweeping lines and large wheels, the look is appropriately scaled for this model.

There is a lot of attention to detail here too, from the front fascia’s flared “nostrils” to etched wheel wells that amplify the wheels. The deltoid rear side windows place a sporty imprint on this vehicle.

Genesis equips the GV70 with standard 18-inch alloy wheels or 19-inch sport alloy wheels. Optionally, 21-inch sport alloy wheels are available. All models come with full LED lights, heated side mirrors, roof rails, and a power liftgate. The 3.5T model comes with a Sport Appearance Package and a panoramic sunroof.

Interior Highlights

2023 Genesis GV70 front seats

Genesis impresses us with interiors that are among the best in the class. The cabin features an aircraft design with elliptical patterns. The upper dash is topped with the display screen, while all other controls and features, including the steering wheel, sit in the lower section.

Soft-touch materials dominate the cabin with little evidence of piano black trim, which is another term for disguised plastic. The knurled knobs add substance and sophistication, an important attention to detail that elevates this model.

Aluminum trim pieces on the door sill plates come standard. Ambient lighting is reserved for the 3.5T grade.

Imitation leather seats are standard; real hides come with the 3.5T model. Power front seats, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control are included. Choose the 3.5T grade and this one adds a power cushion extender for the driver, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

We found the front seats very comfortable and supportive, especially when equipped with the power lumbar support offering four-way adjustment. The rear 60/40 bench seat folds flat. It offers excellent room for two or three in a pinch.

Cargo space measures 28.9 cubic feet behind the second row or 56.9 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. Both figures are near average for the segment, rivaling the Audi Q5 and just behind the BMW X3.

Technology Features

2023 Genesis GV70 interior

Genesis equals or betters its competitors in all matters of multimedia and technology. An 8-inch color instrument panel display and a 14.5-inch center infotainment system with navigation come standard. Also available is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that’s fully configurable.

A 9-speaker audio system may be upgraded to a 16-speaker Lexicon premium audio package. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, four USB ports, a 120-volt outlet, and a wireless charging pad are included. A second power outlet and a heads-up display are available.

The GV70 also features a fingerprint authentication system. With one touch of the display panel, this SUV starts the engine without the key present.

Although a convenience, sensitive personal information is stored by Genesis with unknown security protocols to protect privacy. For security-conscious consumers, the system may be ignored in favor of a push-button start.

Safety Equipment

Genesis equips the GV70 with most of the expected driver-assist equipment. Lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking are included. High beam assist, highway driving assist, and parking distance warning-rear are also standard.

Customers will find a surround-view camera bundled with certain packages. The same can be said for the blind-spot monitors which display in the instrument panel and extend side views once a turn signal is activated. The latter seems like a gimmick, but we found it useful on crowded, multi-lane highways.

Powertrain Choices

Genesis, a division of Hyundai Motors, shares powertrains with Hyundai and Kia. Two new engines rolled out in recent years and both are turbocharged. An 8-speed automatic transmission routes power to all four wheels.

The standard model comes with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an output of 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. This choice earns an EPA-estimated 28/24/22 mpg city/highway/combined.

The 3.5T model comes with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The EPA fuel economy ratings are 19/24/21 mpg.  Both engines require premium fuel.

The GV70 has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Driving Highlights

2023 Genesis GV70 rear

We’ve driven various Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models with the new engines. Both engines replace a set of V6 engines that are still utilized in some models. The four-cylinder engine develops more power than each of the older V6s.

Choose the standard engine and this one delivers satisfying performance all around. Both engines have slight turbo lag that largely disappears when operated in sport mode.

The V6, though, is the clear winner. This engine enables a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds, approaching the performance level of select BMW and Mercedes-Benz models.

We do, however, take exception with the 8-speed automatic transmission. For the most part, it shifts smoothly, but under more spirited driving conditions, it delays downshifts noticeably. Using the paddle shifters eliminates that sensation, but it shouldn’t be the driver’s recourse.

Benefitting the GV70 the most is its platform, one that it shares with the G70 sedan. Unlike the G70 with standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, the GV70 comes with all-wheel drive only.

Further, Genesis harvested the same suspension system and driving dynamics as the sedan, particularly with the top-grade model. Direct steering and weighted handling along with a rigid body help this SUV remain poised, with body roll minimized accordingly.

Still, the Porsche Macan is the performance champ in this segment with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio a close second.

Genesis GV70 Considerations

The affordable price point for the Genesis GV70 makes it an attractive vehicle in a crowded segment. Genesis may not yet have the panache of BMW or Mercedes-Benz, but the marque continues to develop outstanding models, including the GV70.

Genesis is a cut above Lincoln, competes well with Cadillac, but aspires to reach higher.

Opting for the V6 adds $11,100 to the cost. In addition to the engine upgrade, customers enjoy a higher level of equipment, including quilted leather seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and the panoramic sunroof. The standard all-wheel drive should clinch it for some, an otherwise costly upgrade in select competing models.
